Who Was Mother Solomon?

Imagine a super-kind lady named Margaret Grey Eyes Solomon, but everyone called her Mother Solomon! She was born a long, long time ago, in 1816, in Ohio. Her dad was a Wyandot chief, which is like a leader of her people. She learned to be a great housekeeper and even learned English at a special school. She was a very important person to the Wyandot people.

Adventures and New Homes

Mother Solomon's family moved to a special place called the Big Spring Reservation. There, she heard amazing stories from the elders, like listening to your grandparents tell tales! Later, her people had to move far away to Kansas. It was a tough journey, and things were hard at first. She had more children in Kansas, but sadly, she lost her husband and some of her children there.

Back Home and a Special Name

After moving back to Ohio, Mother Solomon started helping out by babysitting lots of children. Because she was so caring and looked after everyone, the people in her village gave her a wonderful nickname: 'Mother Solomon'! It was like everyone saw her as a loving mom to the whole community. She also worked hard to fix up their old church.

Sharing Her Culture!

Mother Solomon loved her Wyandot culture and wanted to share it. She even sang a song in the Wyandot language at her church's rededication party! Everyone was so impressed by her. She was a very popular person, and when she passed away in 1890, many newspapers wrote about her. Her special belongings are even kept in a museum today!
