Oops! A Train Goes Too Far!

One morning in London, a train on the underground, which is like a super-fast subway, was supposed to stop at Moorgate station. But it didn't! It kept going and crashed right into the wall at the very end of the track.

This was a very big accident, and sadly, many people were hurt. It was the worst peacetime accident ever on the London Underground, which is a huge network of train tunnels under the city.

Squished Like a Sandwich!

When the train hit the wall, it was like a giant pushing a toy car! The first train car got squished really, really small. It was supposed to be as long as a school bus, but it got squished down to be shorter than a small car! The other cars behind it also got pushed together, like a stack of pancakes. It was very hot inside the tunnels because the air couldn't move around well.

A Mystery Driver

The people who looked into the accident tried to figure out why the train didn't stop. They found out that the driver, a man named Leslie Newson, was okay at first, but sadly, he didn't make it. They couldn't find any problem with the train itself. It was a big mystery why the train kept going. Sometimes, people get distracted or have health problems that make them forget things.

Making Trains Safer!

After this sad event, the people who run the London Underground made trains much safer. They invented a special system that automatically stops a train if it's going too fast and doesn't slow down. This is called Moorgate protection!

It's like a guardian angel for the train, making sure it stops safely at every station. They also put up special signs to remember everyone who was affected by the crash.
