Key Facts
The River's Big Job!
The Mississippi River is like a super long, watery road that goes through lots of states. During the Civil War, it was super important! It was like a highway for soldiers and supplies.
Both sides, the North and the South, knew they had to control this giant river to win the war. It was so important that one general said the river was worth more than all the land put together! That's a lot of importance for one river!
Catching the River's Ends!
In the war, the North, called the Union, got really smart. They grabbed two very important spots on the river. One was a big city called New Orleans, right where the river meets the ocean. The other was a bendy part of the river way up north. This meant the South, called the Confederacy, only had the middle part of the river. It was like catching both ends of a giant snake!
Splitting the South in Two!
When the North took over more of the river, they captured big cities like Memphis and Vicksburg. This was a HUGE win! It was like cutting a pizza right down the middle. The South's land was split into two parts. The part on the other side of the river couldn't easily get supplies or talk to the rest of the South. This made it much easier for the North to win the war.
The River Flows Free!
After the North took control of the whole Mississippi River, the President, Abraham Lincoln, was super happy. He said, 'The Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea.' This meant the river could flow all the way to the ocean without any fighting or stopping it. It was a sign that the war was turning in favor of the North, all thanks to controlling this amazing river!
