Key Facts
Meet the Speedy Flyers!
Imagine a super-fast arrow that can steer itself! That's kind of like a missile. They are like rockets, but they have a special job: to hit a specific target.
Some missiles are small, like a big toy airplane, while others can be as long as a school bus! They are built to fly very, very fast, sometimes faster than a race car. They are made of strong metal and have powerful engines to push them through the sky.
Where Did These Flyers Come From?
People have been inventing amazing flying machines for a long time. The idea of a flying weapon that could be aimed came about a long time ago. But it was during big wars, like World War I and World War II, that scientists and engineers really started building and improving missiles.
They wanted to create ways to send things far away to hit targets without sending people. It was a big challenge to make them fly straight and hit what they were supposed to!
Why Are Missiles So Special?
Missiles are special because they can travel incredibly long distances and hit very small targets. Think about throwing a ball – it's hard to hit a tiny spot from far away. Missiles have special brains, called guidance systems, that help them steer and stay on course.
This makes them very useful for reaching places that are too dangerous or too far for people to go. They are like super-smart, super-fast delivery trucks for important missions.
How Do They Zoom So Fast?
Missiles have a powerful engine, just like a rocket! This engine burns special fuel very quickly, creating a lot of hot gas that shoots out the back. This push makes the missile fly forward really fast.
Many missiles also have wings, like an airplane, which help them fly smoothly through the air. Some have little fins that help them steer, like the rudder on a boat, to change direction and stay on target.
