What is a Military Brat?

The etymology of the term is debated, but it has been documented in military culture since the mid-20th century. It has evolved from a colloquialism into a recognized identity within the military community.

Military brats often form a distinct subculture, sharing common experiences such as living in overseas territories or on large military installations, which fosters a sense of shared identity.

The term 'military brat' identifies children raised in military households. This lifestyle is defined by the requirements of military service, which often dictate the family's location and stability.

Military brats represent a significant demographic that possesses high levels of cultural awareness and adaptability, though they also face challenges related to frequent transitions and parental absence.

The military lifestyle involves a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), which is the official process of moving military personnel and their families to new duty assignments, often every two to three years.
