Who Was This Hero?

Imagine a kind man who loved to read and teach, but also had a big dream! That was Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. He was born a long, long time ago in Mexico, when it was ruled by people from far away.

Miguel became a priest, which meant he helped people in his town. But he saw that many people weren't treated fairly, and he wanted to change that. He was a bit like a superhero with a plan to make things better for everyone.

The Spark of Freedom!

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla didn't like how his country was being treated. He believed everyone deserved to be free and have a good life. So, in the early morning of September 16, 1810, he rang the church bell!

This was a secret signal to start a big fight for Mexico's independence. It's called the 'Grito de Dolores,' which means 'Cry of Dolores.' This cry was the very beginning of Mexico becoming its own country!

A Leader for the People

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a very smart man. He loved learning and even started schools to teach people new things, like farming and making crafts. He wanted everyone to have a chance to learn and grow.

When he decided to fight for freedom, many people followed him because they trusted him and believed in his dream of a free Mexico. He was a true leader who inspired others to stand up for what's right.

Why We Remember Him Today

Even though Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla's fight was very hard, and sadly he didn't see Mexico become completely free, his bravery started everything! Mexico celebrates its Independence Day on September 16th every year because of his courageous act. He is known as the 'Father of Mexico' because he was the first to bravely say, 'Let's be free!' His courage reminds us that one person can make a huge difference.
