I always wondered what they called it when they stole each others food...besides kind of mean...kleptoparasitism...in this case a midshipman fish.

Midshipman fish not only feed the eagles, but evidently many birds, including crows, ravens and herons. The fish also provide nitrogen for our forests, like the salmon do.
I've never seen this before... a crow with a midshipman. He seemed to be having more success than the eagles.

Your First Steps on a Big Ship!

A midshipman is like a student leader on a navy ship. They are learning to become an officer, which means they help command the ship and its crew. Think of them as the newest members of the captain's team, getting ready for big responsibilities. They are the lowest rank of officer, meaning they are just starting out on their journey to lead.

Sailing Through Time!

A long, long time ago, a midshipman was actually an experienced sailor who worked in the middle of the ship. But over hundreds of years, the job changed! Now, it's for young people training to be officers. They used to learn by working on ships for years, but today they go to special naval schools first, like a super-special boarding school for future navy leaders.

Why Midshipmen Are Super Important!

Midshipmen are the future leaders of the navy! They learn all the skills needed to sail ships, navigate the seas, and keep everyone safe. Without them, there wouldn't be enough experienced officers to run the navy's important missions. They are like the apprentices who will one day become the master builders of the fleet, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Learning the Ropes (Literally!)

Becoming a midshipman means a lot of learning! They spend time in naval colleges, studying hard, and then they get to go to sea. On the ship, they practice everything they learned, from steering to understanding how the ship works. It's like going to school and then doing a big project to show what you know, all while on a real ship!
