Key Facts
Meet Michael, the Moon's Lonely Pilot!
Imagine being in space, all by yourself, with the Moon right outside your window! That was Michael Collins. He was an American astronaut, which means he got to fly rockets into space.
His most famous trip was on Apollo 11. While his friends Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon, Michael was the pilot of their spaceship, the Columbia. He flew around the Moon, waiting for them to come back.
It was a super important job!
From Flying Planes to Flying to the Moon!
Michael Collins didn't start by flying to the Moon. First, he was a pilot in the Air Force, flying fast jets. He was so good that NASA picked him to be an astronaut! He went on another space trip before Apollo 11, called Gemini 10. On that trip, he even went on a spacewalk, floating outside his spaceship. He was one of the first people to do that more than once. He loved flying and exploring.
Why Michael's Solo Trip Was So Cool!
Michael Collins was like the ultimate chauffeur for the Moon landing! While Neil and Buzz were busy planting flags and collecting rocks, Michael was orbiting the Moon 30 times. That's like driving around your town 30 times without stopping!
He had to make sure the spaceship was working perfectly and be ready to pick up his friends. Without him, they wouldn't have had a ride home. He was a very brave and important part of the mission.
After Space, More Adventures!
When Michael Collins came back to Earth, he didn't just relax. He helped run the National Air and Space Museum, where you can see amazing airplanes and rockets! He also wrote books about his adventures. He was given special awards for his bravery and for helping America reach the Moon. Michael Collins showed everyone that even when you're alone, you can do something amazing.
