Key Facts
Why Did They Start Arguing?
Imagine you have a favorite toy, and someone else says it's theirs! That's a bit like what happened. Mexico thought Texas was its land, but many people in Texas wanted to join the United States.
The United States also wanted more land, like California, and tried to buy it. Mexico said no! This disagreement over who owned the land, especially near the big Rio Grande River, was like a spark that started a fire.
The Big Fight Begins!
In 1846, soldiers from both countries met near the Rio Grande River. There was a clash, and then the President of the United States said it was time for war. American soldiers marched into Mexico and took over important places. They even sailed ships to California and landed soldiers on the beach to take control of that land too. It was a very busy time with lots of movement!
Who Were the Big Players?
One important person was James K. Polk, the President of the United States. He really wanted the country to get bigger. In Mexico, a leader named Antonio López de Santa Anna was in charge at different times. He had been captured once before after a fight for Texas. There were also brave soldiers and generals on both sides who led the armies in battles across the land.
What Happened in the End?
After a lot of fighting, the war ended in 1848. Mexico agreed to let the United States have a huge amount of land. This included places that are now California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of other states. The United States paid Mexico some money for this land, but it was a very sad time for Mexico because they lost so much territory.
