Who Was King Menander?

Imagine a king who was like a superhero ruler! That was Menander I, who lived a super long time ago, around 150 BC. He was an Indo-Greek king, which means he ruled over people from both Greece and India. He was so good at ruling that people called him 'the Saviour' and even 'the Great'! He was the most famous king of his time, ruling a land that was bigger than many countries today.

King Menander's Awesome Adventures!

Menander's kingdom was HUGE! It stretched from where the Kabul River flows all the way to the Ravi River. That's like ruling from one side of a giant playground to the other, and then some!

He conquered lands and was so powerful that a writer said he conquered more places than even Alexander the Great. He might have even sent his armies south, all the way to places like Rajasthan and Gujarat, and as far east as Patna!

King Menander's Big Brain!

Menander wasn't just a strong ruler, he was also super smart and curious. He loved learning about different ideas, especially Buddhism. He had amazing talks with a wise Buddhist teacher named Nagasena. These talks were so important that they were written down in a famous book called the 'Milinda Panha,' which means 'The Questions of King Milinda.' This book is still read today!

What Happened to King Menander?

After ruling for many years, Menander's story comes to an end. Some stories say he gave his kingdom to his son and became a peaceful monk. But another story tells us he died while on a big adventure, leading his army. His people loved him so much that they shared his ashes and built special monuments, like little hills called stupas, all over his kingdom to remember their great king.
