Key Facts
Who Was Sultan Mehmed VI?
Mehmed VI was the very last sultan, or emperor, of the Ottoman Empire. Think of him like the final captain of a super old ship that had sailed for over 600 years! He was in charge from 1918 to 1922. He also had a special job called a caliph, which meant he was a leader for Muslims too. His reign was a time of big changes, and sadly, the empire ended while he was in charge.
A World in Big Trouble!
When Mehmed VI became sultan, the world was in a mess after a giant war called World War I. His empire had lost the war, and other countries started to move into parts of his land. Mehmed VI hoped that being friends with Britain would help make things better, but it didn't work out. It was like trying to share your toys when someone else already has them!
Saying Goodbye to an Empire
People in Turkey started to feel like they wanted their own country, not an empire ruled by a sultan. They started a new government far away from the sultan's palace. The sultan didn't like this and even called them bad names! But the new government got stronger and stronger, and eventually, they decided there would be no more sultans.
The End of an Era
In 1922, the people in charge of the new government voted to end the sultan's job. Mehmed VI had to leave his home and country. He went to live in Italy and never got to come back. It was a sad ending for a very, very old empire that had been around for so long. A new country, the Republic of Turkey, was born instead.
