Measure for Measure

Key Facts
Meet the Sneaky Duke and the Grumpy Ruler!
Imagine a city called Vienna where the boss, Duke Vincentio, has to leave for a bit. He doesn't want anyone to mess things up, so he picks a super strict guy named Angelo to be in charge. But Duke Vincentio is a bit of a prankster!
He dresses up like a regular person, like a friar, so he can walk around and see what Angelo is really doing. It's like playing a game of hide-and-seek, but with the whole city watching!
Uh Oh! Someone Broke the Rules!
Angelo is really, really strict. He finds a young man named Claudio who did something wrong – he got a girlfriend pregnant before they were married. Angelo thinks this is super bad and decides Claudio must die!
It’s like if your principal decided that talking in class meant you had to leave school forever. Claudio’s sister, Isabella, is a kind nun who wants to save her brother. She goes to beg Angelo to change his mind.
A Tricky Deal!
When Isabella asks Angelo to be kind, he makes a really unfair deal. He says he’ll let Claudio live if Isabella agrees to do something she doesn't want to do. It’s a very difficult choice for her! The Duke, still disguised as a friar, sees all of this happening. He knows Angelo isn't being fair. This play is full of surprises and makes you wonder what will happen next.
Is It Funny or Sad?
This play is called a comedy, which usually means it’s funny. It has jokes and disguises, like the Duke pretending to be a friar. But it also has serious parts, like someone being sentenced to death. It’s a bit like a story that makes you laugh one minute and then makes you think really hard the next. It’s called a 'problem play' because it’s tricky to figure out if it’s happy or sad!
