Maunsell Forts: Giant Sea Castles!

These incredible forts stand tall in the water, in two special places called the Thames and Mersey estuaries. Think of them like giant legs holding up a house, but the house is a fort and the legs are in the sea! They are part of the United Kingdom, a country made of islands. These forts are like lonely islands themselves, far from the busy land.

Long, long ago, during a big war called World War II, people were worried about ships coming to attack. So, clever builders designed these forts to be like giant watchtowers. They were built on tall metal legs so that enemy ships couldn't get too close. Soldiers lived inside, keeping watch and ready to defend their country from the sea.

These forts are named after a very smart engineer named Guy Maunsell. He was the one who came up with the amazing idea of building these forts on stilts in the sea. It was a brand new way to protect the coast, and his name is remembered every time we talk about these incredible structures.

After the war, the forts weren't needed anymore, so the soldiers moved out. For a while, some people even used them to broadcast music like secret radio stations! Now, they are mostly empty and a bit rusty, but people still visit them sometimes. They are like old, forgotten giants of the sea.
