After concluding his playing days, Rhule transitioned seamlessly into coaching, initially as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater. This formative period allowed him to absorb the nuances of coaching strategy and player mentorship. Over the subsequent decade, he honed his craft as an assistant coach at multiple institutions, absorbing diverse coaching philosophies and accumulating invaluable experience before ascending to his first head coaching position at Temple University in 2013.

Rhule's tenure at Temple University marked a significant turning point in his career, where he established himself as a highly effective program builder. During his four years with the Owls, he guided them to their only two seasons with ten or more wins since 1979, a remarkable feat that demonstrated his ability to elevate a program.

This success caught the attention of Baylor University, which hired him in 2017. While his initial two seasons at Baylor were challenging, with a combined record of 8-17, Rhule once again showcased his transformative capabilities. By the 2019 season, the Bears had dramatically improved, finishing with an impressive 11-3 record, a testament to his coaching acumen and his ability to instill a winning mentality.

His success at both institutions highlighted his skill in rebuilding and fostering a culture of sustained achievement.

In 2020, Matt Rhule made the highly anticipated move to the National Football League, accepting the head coaching position for the Carolina Panthers. The NFL represents the pinnacle of professional American football, characterized by intense competition and immense pressure. Rhule's tenure with the Panthers was marked by significant challenges, and the team was unable to achieve a playoff berth during his time there.

He concluded his time in Carolina with a combined record of 11 wins and 27 losses. Despite the team's struggles, his experience in the NFL provided him with a unique perspective on the highest level of the sport and the demands placed upon coaches and players in that environment. This period, while not yielding the desired on-field success, undoubtedly contributed to his growth as a coach.

Following his departure from the Carolina Panthers, Matt Rhule swiftly secured a new, long-term opportunity. In December 2022, he agreed to an eight-year contract to become the head football coach at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. This move signaled a return to the collegiate ranks, where he has previously demonstrated exceptional success in rebuilding programs.
