Key Facts
Where is Masterton?
Imagine a town nestled in a beautiful part of New Zealand called the Wairarapa. That's Masterton! It's like a cozy spot between two rivers, the Ruamāhunga and Waingawa, and a little stream called Waipoua.
It's a long way from the big city of Wellington, about as far as driving from your house to grandma's house if she lives really far away! The Wairarapa is a special region because it's separated from Wellington by big, tall mountains called the Remutaka ranges. So, Masterton is like a hidden gem!
Lots of People and Animals!
Masterton is a busy town! About 22,600 people live right in the town, and if you count everyone in the whole area, it's almost 29,000 people. That's more people than can fit in a giant stadium!
Many of these people help the farmers who live nearby. You'll find lots of sheep in this area, and Masterton is famous for something called the Golden Shears. It's a competition where people shear sheep super fast!
Imagine trying to give a sheep a haircut in just a minute!
What Do People Do There?
In Masterton, many people work with the farms around them, helping with all sorts of things. They also build new places for businesses to work, called industrial parks. These are like special neighborhoods for factories and workshops.
Masterton is also the super-duper headquarters for the Golden Shears competition. This is a really exciting event where the fastest sheep shearers in the world show off their amazing skills. It's a big deal for the town and brings lots of visitors!
A Town with a Name
Masterton has a special Māori name too, which is Whakaoriori. This name tells us about the history and culture of the land. The town is the main place in the Wairarapa region, like the boss of the area!
It's where important decisions are made for the towns and farms around it. So, Masterton isn't just a place to live; it's a hub for farming, fun competitions, and a place with a rich history that's still important today.
