Who Was Lady Washington?

Imagine being married to the most important man in a brand new country! That was Martha Washington. Her husband, George Washington, was the first president of the United States.

Even though people didn't call her 'First Lady' back then, she was the very first one! She was like a queen, but for America, and everyone called her 'Lady Washington'. She had to be very polite and graceful because everyone was watching her to see how a president's wife should act.

A Life Full of Changes

Martha's life had lots of ups and downs. She got married when she was young and had children, but sadly, not all of them grew up. When her first husband passed away, she became a wealthy lady!

Later, she married George Washington, and they lived on a big farm called Mount Vernon. When George became president, Martha had to leave her quiet farm life and move to a busy city. It was a big change for her!

Helping During Tough Times

During the big American Revolution war, Martha was super brave. Her husband was the leader of the army. When winter came and the fighting stopped, Martha would visit the soldiers in their camps. She brought them comfort and acted like a caring mom, making sure they felt looked after. She was a symbol of hope for the soldiers and for the whole country during those difficult years.

Hosting Big Parties!

Being the president's wife meant Martha had to host lots of parties and dinners. She had to be a great host, making sure everyone felt welcome. She also knew that how she acted showed the world what America was like. So, she was always dignified and kind. Even though she sometimes missed her quiet life at Mount Vernon, she did her best to be a wonderful First Lady for everyone.
