Donatien Alphonse François, who everyone called the Marquis de Sade, was born a long, long time ago in France, in 1740. He came from a fancy family and was even a soldier! But he was also a writer who wrote some very strange and shocking stories.

These stories got him into a lot of trouble, and he ended up spending many years in different prisons and even places for people who were not feeling well in their minds.

His wife would sometimes sneak his writings out of prison for him.

The Marquis de Sade was known for being a 'libertine,' which is a word for someone who doesn't follow the usual rules, especially about behavior. His writings and actions led to him being arrested many times. He was in prison for things like sex crimes and writing things that were considered very naughty or even evil.

He spent so much time behind bars that he was in jail for most of his adult life!

Believe it or not, a word we still use today comes from the Marquis de Sade's name! The word is 'sadism.' It means getting pleasure from hurting other people. While some people think his real-life actions were not as bad as his stories, the idea of finding joy in causing pain is linked to him. His stories made people think about dark ideas, even if they were scary.
