Key Facts
Who Are the March 23ers?
The March 23 Movement, or M23 for short, is like a special club of fighters in a country called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They started in 2012. Think of them as a group that wants to change things, but sometimes their actions make people have to leave their homes. They are mostly in the eastern part of the country, near countries like Uganda and Rwanda.
A Story of Promises and Problems
A long time ago, some fighters who were part of a group called CNDP were supposed to join the country's army. They were promised that their group would become a political party and that refugees could come back home. But some people didn't like the leaders of CNDP because of things that happened before.
So, in 2012, some of these fighters decided to form their own group, M23, because they felt the promises weren't kept.
Taking Over a Big City!
One really surprising thing happened in 2012. The M23 group actually took control of a big city called Goma! Goma is home to about a million people, which is like everyone in a really, really big school! They were asked to leave Goma, and they did, so that leaders could talk about peace. It shows how much power they had at that moment.
Still Trying to Make Things Right?
Even though M23 has had ups and downs, they are still around. They have been quiet sometimes, but then they started fighting again in 2022. They have taken over towns, and sadly, this has made many, many people leave their homes to find safety. There are also worries about bad things happening to people, and other countries are watching closely.
