Meet the Ocean's Speedy Swimmer!

The Manx shearwater is a super cool seabird that spends most of its life soaring over the big blue ocean. It's about the size of a big pigeon, but with long, skinny wings perfect for gliding on the wind. These birds are amazing swimmers and divers, using their wings to 'fly' underwater to catch yummy fish and squid.

They have a special nose that helps them smell their food from far away, like a built-in GPS for dinner!

A Name With a Secret Past!

Did you know this bird used to have a different name? Long ago, people called them 'Manks puffins'! That's because when they were babies, people used to collect their fluffy bodies. The word 'puffin' actually came from an old language and meant 'cured shearwater babies'. The puffins we know today got their name later because they also like to dig nests, just like shearwaters do!

Home Sweet Ocean Home!

Manx shearwaters are travelers! They breed on islands all around the North Atlantic Ocean, like in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and even Iceland. But when it's not nesting time, they fly thousands of miles to warmer waters off the coasts of South America and Africa.

Imagine flying all the way from your home to another continent just for a snack! They love to dive deep into the ocean to find their meals.

Super Senses for Super Flyers!

These birds have incredible senses. Their sense of smell is so good that they can find their way back to their burrows on dark nights, even if they've been away for weeks! They also have a special tube on their nose that helps them smell fish from miles away. This helps them find food when they are flying high above the waves. They are truly masters of the sea and sky!
