Meet the Giant Hill Fort!

Maiden Castle is a super old, super big fort built on a hill a long, long time ago. It's like a giant's playground! People built huge walls and deep ditches all around the top of the hill to keep themselves safe. It's so big, it's the largest hill fort in all of Britain. Think of it as a massive, ancient fortress that people lived in and defended.

Building a Super Fortress!

People started building at Maiden Castle around 600 BC, which is over 2,600 years ago! First, it was a simple fort, but then they made it HUGE. They added more and more walls and ditches, making it three times bigger. These walls were so tall, they were probably taller than a few houses stacked up! It took a lot of work and many people to build something so massive.

Life in the Olden Days

For a while, lots of people lived inside Maiden Castle. They grew crops and made it their home. But as time went on, fewer people lived there, and they moved to one end. Even after the Romans came, people still used parts of the castle. Later, a temple was built, but eventually, everyone left, and it was only used for farms.

A Place for Stories and Digging!

Even though people don't live there anymore, Maiden Castle is still special. Famous writers have written stories about it, and clever scientists called archaeologists have dug there to learn its secrets. They found out how people lived and built it. Today, it's a protected place, like a treasure, for everyone to visit and imagine the past.
