What Was This Big Road Plan?

A long, long time ago, grown-ups wanted to build a super-fast road called the M11 link road in east London. It was supposed to help cars zoom from one big road to another, like a shortcut. But building a road this big means taking up lots of space, and sometimes that means cutting down trees or changing neighborhoods where people live.

This plan had been around since the 1960s, which is even before your parents were born!

When People Said 'No Way!'

Lots of people didn't like the idea of this road. They worried about the trees and the homes that would be lost. So, they decided to protest!

A protest is when people show they disagree with something. They started by hugging trees to stop them from being cut down. Some people even made tiny pretend countries, called micronations, on houses that were supposed to be knocked down.

It was like a big game of 'don't move us!'.

The Tree That Started It All

One of the most famous parts of the protest was about a special tree on a place called George Green. When people found out the tree might be cut down, they got really upset. They gathered around it to protect it. This made the news, and soon people from all over came to help. It showed that even one tree could be important enough for many people to fight for!

Did They Stop the Road?

Even though the protesters tried their very best, the road was eventually built. It opened in 1999. But the protests made a big difference! It cost a lot of money to manage all the people protesting, and it made other people think twice about building more big roads. The road is now one of the busiest and most crowded roads in the whole country, so maybe the protesters had a good point after all!
