A Terrible Day in Waco

Once upon a time, in a town called Waco, Texas, a 17-year-old boy named Jesse Washington was accused of doing something very bad. It was May 15, 1916. Instead of letting the grown-ups decide what happened, a big crowd of people took him. They hurt him very badly, and it was a very sad and scary day for everyone who knew it was wrong.

Can you imagine a crowd bigger than your whole school, and then some? Over 10,000 people, including police officers, came to watch! Some people even brought their kids to see. They didn't stop the terrible things that happened to Jesse. It was like a scary show, but it was real life, and it was not okay.
