Meet the King Who Was 'Desired'!

Louis XVIII was a king of France a long, long time ago. His real name was Louis Stanislas Xavier, but everyone called him 'the Desired' because people really wanted him to be king. He was born in 1755, which is super old! He was the brother of another king, Louis XVI. He loved being king for almost 10 years, from 1814 to 1824, but there was a little break in the middle.

A King's Long Adventure Away From Home!

When Louis was young, France had a big change called the French Revolution. It was so big that Louis had to leave his home country and live far away for 23 years! That's longer than you've been alive!

He lived in places like Germany and England. He missed France a lot and really wanted to come back and be king. Finally, when Napoleon, a famous leader, was gone, Louis got to return to France and become king.

King of a Different France!

When Louis finally became king, France was different. Before, kings had all the power, but now, France had a new rulebook called a constitution. This meant the king had to share his power, like sharing your toys. Louis was a constitutional monarch, which was a new way for France to be ruled. He had to make sure everyone followed the new rules and tried to make France a happy place again.

The King Who Couldn't Have His Own Kids!

Louis XVIII was the king, but he didn't have any children of his own. So, when he got too old to be king, his brother, Charles, became the next king. Louis was the last king of France to die while still being the king.

After him, other leaders either gave up their crowns or were told they couldn't be leaders anymore. He ruled France for a good amount of time, making important decisions for his country.
