Who is General Lloyd Austin?

Imagine a really important leader who used to be a general in the army! That's Lloyd Austin. He was born a long, long time ago, on August 8, 1953.

He's like a captain of a giant ship, but instead of a ship, he helped lead the United States Army and then became a super important boss called the Secretary of Defense. This means he helped make big decisions about keeping our country safe. He's the first African American to do many of these big jobs, which is super cool!

His Awesome Army Adventures!

Before becoming a top boss, General Austin had many exciting adventures in the army. He commanded soldiers in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Imagine leading a team as big as your whole school, or even bigger!

He was in charge of different parts of the army, from a small group to a really, really big one. He even commanded soldiers when they were in tough situations, like during a war. He did this at different levels, like being a one-star general all the way up to a four-star general, which is like going from being a class helper to the principal!

Super Brave and Super Smart!

General Austin is known for being super brave and smart. He received a special award called the Silver Star because he did something incredibly brave during the invasion of Iraq. This award is one of the highest honors someone can get for being courageous.

He also received five Defense Distinguished Service Medals, which are given to people who do an outstanding job serving the country. These awards show how much people trusted him and how well he did his important work to keep everyone safe.

After the Army, Still Helping!

Even after he retired from being a general, Lloyd Austin didn't stop helping! He joined the boards of different companies, which means he gave advice and helped them make good choices. He also helped a university.

Then, President Joe Biden asked him to become the Secretary of Defense. This is a HUGE job! He was confirmed by the Senate, which is like a big group of people who agree on important decisions, with a vote of 93 to 2.

That means almost everyone thought he was the perfect person for the job!
