Who Were the Little Rock Nine?

Imagine nine students who wanted to go to a special high school called Little Rock Central High. But this was a long time ago, and in some places, kids who looked different, like African Americans, weren't allowed to go to the same schools as white kids. These nine students were super smart and had great grades.

They were chosen by a group called the NAACP to be the first African American students to try and go to this school. Their names were Ernest, Elizabeth, Jefferson, Terrence, Carlotta, Minnijean, Gloria, Thelma, and Melba. They were pioneers, like explorers going to a new land!

A Big Problem at the School Door!

When the first day of school came in 1957, the nine students were super excited but also a little nervous. But guess what? The governor of Arkansas, a man named Orval Faubus, sent soldiers to stand in front of the school doors!

These soldiers, part of the Arkansas National Guard, blocked the students from going inside. It was like having a giant wall built just for them. The students had to wait and wonder if they would ever get to learn inside that school.

A President Steps In!

This was a really big deal, and the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, heard about it. He believed that everyone should be able to go to school and learn.

So, he made a very important decision. He told the Arkansas National Guard soldiers to stop blocking the students and instead, to help keep them safe! He even sent soldiers from the U.S.

Army to make sure the nine students could walk into school without being stopped. It was like the president saying, 'This is not fair, and I will help!'

Why They Are Superstars!

The Little Rock Nine were incredibly brave. They faced scary situations and mean words, but they kept going to school. They showed everyone that it's important to stand up for what's right, even when it's hard.

Because of their courage, schools in America started to change and become more fair for all kids, no matter what they looked like. Ernest Green was even the first African American student to graduate from that school! They are heroes because they helped make America a better place for students everywhere.
