Key Facts
What's a Planet, Anyway?
Imagine a giant ball floating in space! That's kind of what a planet is. Planets are big, round objects that travel around a star, like our Sun. They don't make their own light; they shine because their star's light bounces off them. There are different kinds of planets, like rocky ones you could walk on (if you could get there!) and gassy ones that are super, super big.
Rocky Worlds and Gas Giants!
Some planets are like Earth, made mostly of rock and metal. These are called terrestrial planets. Others are like giant balloons filled with gas, called gas giants. They are so big that many Earths could fit inside them! There are also icy worlds, which are like gas giants but colder and with more ice.
How Planets Get Their Names
Scientists have special ways to sort planets. They look at what they're made of, how big they are, and where they are in space. Sometimes, planets are named after gods and goddesses from old stories. It's like giving each planet its own special nickname so we can talk about them easily!
Our Solar System's Neighbors
Our own solar system has lots of different planets! We have rocky planets like Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Then, far away, we have the giant gas planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and the icy giants Uranus and Neptune. Each one is unique and has amazing things to discover.
