Library of Celsus
Key Facts
Where in the World is This Awesome Place?
The Library of Celsus is hiding in a place called Ephesus, which is in a country called Turkey today. Think of it like a special treasure buried in the ground! It's near a town called Selçuk. This ancient city was once a super busy place, full of people and exciting buildings. The weather there is usually warm and sunny, perfect for exploring old ruins!
A Building Built for a Special Dad!
A long, long time ago, a very important man named Tiberius Julius Aquila Polemaeanus wanted to build a special home for books to honor his dad, Celsus. His dad was a big deal too! So, they built this library. It was finished when a Roman Emperor named Hadrian was in charge. It's like building a super cool treehouse for your parents, but way, way bigger and made of stone!
So Many Stories, So Little Space!
This library was HUGE for its time! It was the third-biggest library in the whole ancient world, with places like Alexandria and Pergamum being bigger. It's believed to have held about 12,000 scrolls, which are like ancient books. Imagine all the stories and information packed inside! Celsus himself is even buried in a special room under the library.
Oops! Fire and Earthquakes!
Sadly, this amazing library didn't last forever. A big fire, maybe from an earthquake or even an invasion, destroyed the inside and all the scrolls. Later, another earthquake knocked down the front part. For hundreds of years, it was just a pile of old stones. But guess what? Smart people called archaeologists rebuilt the front part so we can see it today!
