Key Facts
Meet Lady Liberty!
Have you ever seen a super tall statue? Lady Liberty is one of the biggest and most famous statues in the whole world! She stands on an island in New York Harbor, waving a torch to welcome people. She's so tall, she's like a giant friend watching over the city. She was a gift from faraway France to the United States, celebrating friendship and freedom.
A Gift from Across the Ocean
Lady Liberty didn't just appear! She was built in France, piece by piece, like a giant puzzle. Then, she was taken apart and shipped across the big ocean in many boxes. Once she arrived in America, workers put her back together. It took a lot of hard work and teamwork to build her, just like building a huge LEGO castle!
Why She's So Important
Lady Liberty is a symbol of freedom. For many people who came to America a long, long time ago, seeing her was the first sign that they were in a new land where they could be free. She holds a tablet with a special date on it, and her torch shines bright, like a beacon of hope. She reminds us that freedom is precious.
What Does She Hold?
Lady Liberty holds a torch high in her right hand, which lights up the sky. In her left hand, she carries a tablet, like a big book. On the tablet is written the date July 4, 1776, which is a very important day for America. She also wears a crown with seven spikes, representing the seven continents and seven seas.
