Lewis and Clark Expedition
Key Facts
Who Were Lewis and Clark?
Imagine two best friends, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who loved adventure! Meriwether Lewis was born in Virginia in 1774. William Clark was born in Virginia in 1770.
President Thomas Jefferson asked them to lead a super important trip. They were told to explore the huge land the United States had just bought from France, called the Louisiana Purchase. It was like getting a giant new playground to explore!
Their mission was to see what was out there, find a way to the Pacific Ocean, and be friendly to everyone they met.
Setting Off on the Big Adventure!
In 1804, Lewis and Clark, along with about 40 brave explorers, started their journey from a place near St. Louis, Missouri. They traveled in a big boat called a keelboat and two smaller canoes.
It was like packing up your whole classroom and going on a super long camping trip! They paddled and walked for thousands of miles, through forests, across rivers, and over mountains. They saw amazing animals like bison and grizzly bears, and plants they had never seen before.
It was a long and sometimes tough journey, but they kept going!
Meeting New Friends and Discovering Wonders!
Along the way, they met many different Native American tribes. One very important person they met was a young Shoshone woman named Sacagawea. She was a translator and guide, and she even brought her baby with her!
Sacagawea was super helpful, showing them safe paths and helping them trade for food. The explorers drew maps of the land, wrote down what they saw, and collected samples of plants and rocks. They were like super detectives, learning all about this new part of America!
Making It All the Way to the Ocean!
After more than two years and traveling over 4,000 miles, Lewis and Clark and their team finally reached the Pacific Ocean in 1805! Imagine seeing the giant ocean for the first time after such a long journey. They built a fort called Fort Clatsop to stay for the winter.
The next year, they traveled back home, arriving in 1806. Their amazing expedition showed everyone what a huge and wonderful country America was, and it helped people learn how to live and travel across it.
