Meet the Little Jumper!

Imagine a bird that's super small, even smaller than a chicken! That's the Lesser Florican. It's the smallest bird in its family, which is like being the smallest kid in a class of giants. These birds live in tall, grassy fields in India. They are very good at hiding, so you have to be quiet and patient to spot one. The boys are especially fancy when they want to impress the girls!

The Boys' Amazing Dance!

When it's time to find a mate, the boy Lesser Floricans do something amazing. They leap high into the air, sometimes as high as a playground slide! While they are jumping, they show off their beautiful black and white feathers and long, fancy head feathers.

It's like a special dance to say, 'Look at me! I'm the best!'. This exciting show only happens when the rain comes, during the monsoon season.

Where Do They Live?

Lesser Floricans love to live in places with lots and lots of tall grass. Think of a field so tall it's like a green maze! They are mostly found in the northwestern and central parts of India during the summer. But when winter comes, they travel around and can be found in more places across India. Sadly, these special birds are becoming very rare, and we need to help protect their grassy homes.

Why We Need to Help Them

These little birds are in trouble. Their homes, the tall grasslands, are disappearing because people are using the land for farms or buildings. Also, sometimes people hunt them, which is very sad.

Because there are so few of them left, scientists are worried. It's important for us to learn about the Lesser Florican and help protect the places where they live so they can keep jumping and dancing for years to come.
