Who Was Leopoldo Galtieri?

Leopoldo Galtieri was a man who became the leader of Argentina a long time ago, in 1981. He was a general in the army, which means he was in charge of soldiers. He didn't get elected like a president you might know; instead, he took charge with other army leaders.

He was the top boss for a little while, until 1982. It was a time when the army was in charge of the country, not the people voting for leaders.

His Big Army Job

Before becoming the country's leader, Leopoldo Galtieri was a very important engineer in the army. He helped build things for the soldiers. He was also part of a big change in 1976 when the army took over the government. Later, in 1980, he became the head of the whole army. This put him in a powerful position to become the leader of Argentina a year later.

A Risky Decision

When things weren't going so well for Galtieri and people weren't happy, he made a very big decision. He decided to send soldiers to take over some islands called the Falkland Islands. These islands were far away and belonged to a different country, Great Britain.

This action started a war, and unfortunately for Galtieri, Argentina lost the war. This loss meant he had to step down from being the leader.

What Happened Next?

After Argentina lost the war over the Falkland Islands, Galtieri was no longer the leader. The country started to have elections again so people could choose their leaders. Galtieri was later put on trial for the bad things that happened when he was in charge, like hurting people's rights. He was found guilty of war crimes. He was later set free but then arrested again before he passed away.
