Meet the First King of Belgium!

Once upon a time, Belgium was a brand new country! They needed a king, and they chose Leopold. He was born a prince in Germany a long, long time ago, in 1790.

He was the youngest son, so he wasn't supposed to be king of his home country. But fate had other plans! He became the very first King of the Belgians in 1831.

That means he was the boss of Belgium for over 30 years, until he passed away in 1865. He was a very important person for Belgium's beginning!

A Royal Adventure Story!

Leopold had a super exciting life before becoming king. He even fought in an army when he was young! Later, he moved to England and married a princess named Charlotte.

They were very happy, but sadly, Princess Charlotte got sick and passed away. Leopold was very sad. Then, he was asked to be king of Greece, but he said no!

He thought it was too tricky. But when Belgium asked him to be their king, he said YES! It was a big adventure.

Building a New Country!

King Leopold was like a super builder for Belgium. He helped make sure the country had important things, like trains! Can you imagine Belgium without trains?

He helped build the very first railway in 1835. That's like building the first slide on the playground! He also helped Belgium become a place where people made lots of things in factories.

He was a modern king who wanted Belgium to be strong and successful.

A King's Big Job!

Being king is a big job! Leopold had to make sure everyone in Belgium was safe and happy. Sometimes other countries wanted to cause trouble, but Leopold was good at talking to people and keeping Belgium peaceful. He was also a Protestant, and Belgium had many Catholic people. He showed that people with different beliefs could live together. He was a smart and important leader for his new country.
