This city wasn't always called León. It started out as a small village a long, long time ago, in 1576. The people who lived there decided to name it after a famous person named Don Martín Enríquez de Almanza, who was the viceroy of New Spain.

He had a title that sounded like 'León,' which means 'lion' in Spanish! So, the city got its brave and strong name from a lion, even though there aren't really lions living there today. It's like giving your teddy bear a super cool name!
