Australia's Amazing Talking Islands!

Imagine a giant island continent way down south called Australia! It's surrounded by sparkling blue oceans. For thousands and thousands of years, long before anyone else arrived, Aboriginal peoples lived here and spoke over 250 different languages.

That's more languages than there are types of toys in a giant toy store! Today, English is the most common language, but many other languages are spoken too.

Whispers from the Past

Long, long ago, Aboriginal Australians had their own special languages. These languages told stories, shared knowledge, and helped people understand the land. When Europeans first came to Australia, they brought their language, English.

Over time, English became very popular, but it's important to remember the ancient languages that were spoken first. Some of these old languages are like rare treasures, and only a few people can speak them now.

A World of Words!

Australia is like a giant playground where people from all around the world have come to live. They bring their own languages with them! You might hear people speaking Mandarin, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Greek. It’s like having friends from every country visiting your school. These different languages make Australia a super interesting place to learn and explore.

Talking with Your Hands and Ears

Did you know you can talk with your hands? Australia has a special language called Auslan, which is for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. It uses amazing hand shapes and movements to communicate. There are also other Indigenous sign languages. It shows that there are so many cool ways to share ideas and stories, not just with your voice!
