Key Facts
Where the Boats Landed!
Anzac Cove is a real place on a long, skinny piece of land called the Gallipoli Peninsula. It's by a big blue sea called the Aegean Sea. On April 25, 1915, soldiers from Australia and New Zealand, called ANZACs, landed here in boats.
It was supposed to be a secret landing at night, but things didn't go exactly as planned. They landed a little bit north of where they wanted to be, and it was very dark!
A Nighttime Surprise!
When the ANZAC soldiers got off their boats, it was still dark. They were supposed to land on a specific beach, but they ended up a bit further north. Because it was dark and they were all mixed up, they didn't land in neat groups.
The soldiers had to try and find their way inland, but the Turkish soldiers were already there and ready for them! It was a very surprising and difficult start to their mission.
Fighting on the Cliffs!
The ANZAC soldiers fought hard, but they couldn't reach their main goals that day. They ended up making a small safe spot on the beach, called a beachhead. In some places, they were holding onto the sides of steep cliffs! It was a very tricky situation. The leaders thought about leaving, but they decided to stay and keep fighting. Many soldiers were hurt or sadly lost their lives that day.
Remembering the Day
Even though the soldiers didn't win the battle there, the day they landed, April 25th, is super important for Australia and New Zealand. They call it Anzac Day. It's a special day to remember all the brave soldiers who fought. People in Turkey and the United Kingdom also remember this day. It’s a way to honor the courage of those who were there.
