Key Facts
What's a Land Mine?
A land mine is like a hidden bomb buried just under the dirt. It's usually round and flat, sometimes as small as a dinner plate. When someone or something heavy, like a foot or a tire, presses down on it, it explodes! These are not toys and can be very dangerous. They are made to hurt people or animals and are often hidden in places like fields or roads where people might walk or drive.
Where Did These Bombs Come From?
Land mines have been around for a very long time, even before cars were invented! Soldiers used them in wars to protect areas or stop enemies from coming closer. They would bury them in secret spots.
Over many years, wars have ended, but the land mines are still there, hidden and waiting. It's like finding forgotten toys, but these are very, very dangerous and can hurt people long after the fighting has stopped.
Why Are They So Scary?
The biggest problem with land mines is that they don't know who they are hurting. They can explode on a soldier, a child playing, or even a friendly animal. They stay hidden for years and years, making it unsafe to walk or play in certain areas. It's like a surprise party you don't want! Because they are so hard to find, people have to be very careful in places where land mines might be buried.
How Do They Work?
Inside a land mine is a small amount of explosive material. There's also a special part called a 'pressure plate' or a 'trigger'. When enough weight pushes down on this plate, it pushes a small pin.
This pin hits something that makes a spark, and the spark sets off the explosive! It happens very fast, like a quick 'boom!' It's designed to be triggered by something stepping on it, making it a hidden danger.
