Meet the Giant Water Bowl!

Lake Baikal is a humongous lake way over in Russia, in a place called Siberia. It's like a giant, deep bathtub filled with the freshest water you can imagine! It's so big, it's wider than many countries. This lake is also super, super old, much older than your grandparents or even their grandparents! It's been around for millions and millions of years, making it the oldest lake on Earth.

How Deep Can You Go?

This lake is the deepest in the whole world! If you could dive to the bottom, it would be like going down over 5,000 feet. That's taller than 100 school buses stacked on top of each other! Because it's so deep, it holds a LOT of water. In fact, it has about one-fifth of all the fresh water that isn't frozen on our planet. That's more water than all the Great Lakes in North America combined!

Home to Cool Critters!

Lake Baikal is like a special zoo for animals and plants that live only there. There are tiny shrimp called omul, and even a special kind of seal called the Baikal seal, which is the only kind of seal that lives in freshwater lakes! The water is also super clear, so you can see far down into the blue. It's like looking through a giant, clean window into another world.

A Special Place for People

People have lived around Lake Baikal for a very long time. Some groups, like the Buryat people, live on the eastern side. They raise animals like goats, camels, and horses.

The weather there can be very cold in the winter, with snow everywhere, but it gets warm enough in the summer for plants to grow. Because Lake Baikal is so special, the whole area is protected so it can stay amazing for everyone.
