Key Facts
What Was Lagos Colony?
Lagos Colony was like a special territory that the British government controlled a long, long time ago. It was centered around a busy port city called Lagos, which is now a super big city in Nigeria. The British decided to make it their own in 1861. Think of it like someone claiming a favorite playground spot! This colony became a place where people from different places came to trade and live.
How Did It Become a Colony?
It all started when British ships arrived. A commander named Beddingfield and a British official named William McCoskry wanted Lagos. The local ruler, Oba Dosunmu, didn't want to give up his city, and he bravely resisted for 11 days!
But the British had powerful ships and threatened to use force. So, Oba Dosunmu had to sign a treaty, which meant Lagos became a British colony in 1862. It was like a big change for everyone living there.
A Bustling City Emerges!
By 1872, Lagos Colony was already a very exciting place! It had over 60,000 people, which is more than the number of kids in hundreds of schools put together. It was a place where people from all over the world met to buy and sell goods. This made Lagos a very important trading center, like a giant marketplace connecting different lands and cultures.
Growing Bigger and Bigger!
After some big wars between nearby kingdoms, the British decided to protect more land around Lagos. This area became known as Yorubaland. Later, Lagos Colony joined with other places to form a bigger area called Southern Nigeria.
Eventually, Lagos became the capital of an even larger country called Nigeria. Today, Lagos is one of the biggest cities in all of Africa, with millions and millions of people living there!
