Key Facts
Hooray for the Helpers!
Imagine a giant party just for people who work! That's kind of what Labor Day is. It's a special holiday in the United States that happens on the first Monday of September. It's a day to say 'thank you' to all the hardworking grown-ups who do so many different jobs. These jobs help make our country a great place to live, from building our houses to growing our food and making our toys!
Where Did This Awesome Idea Come From?
A long, long time ago, when people started working together in big groups called unions, they thought it would be super cool to have a day to celebrate all workers. The first big parade to celebrate workers happened in New York City! It was such a good idea that more and more places started celebrating.
Eventually, it became an official holiday for the whole country in 1894. That's over 100 years ago!
Why Do We Cheer for Workers?
Think about all the things you use every day. Someone had to make them! Labor Day reminds us that every job, big or small, is important. It's like how every player on a soccer team is important for winning the game. Workers help build roads, drive buses, teach in schools, and so much more. Their hard work helps everything run smoothly and makes our lives better.
What Happens on Labor Day?
Many people get a day off from work and school to relax and have fun. Families often have picnics, go to the beach, or enjoy parades. It's a time to relax and spend time with loved ones. It's also a reminder of how much we appreciate the people who contribute to our communities through their work every single day.
