Kiviuq (moon)

Key Facts
Meet Kiviuq, the Tumbler!
Kiviuq is a moon that orbits the giant planet Saturn. But it's not like our Moon, which always shows us the same face. Kiviuq is a bit silly! It tumbles and spins in a very strange way as it goes around Saturn. Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly why it tumbles like this. It's like a cosmic acrobat, doing flips and twists in space!
Where Does Kiviuq Live?
Kiviuq lives in the outer parts of the Saturn system, far away from the big planet. It's one of Saturn's many moons, and it's quite a bit smaller than our own Moon. If our Moon were the size of a basketball, Kiviuq might only be the size of a tennis ball! It travels in a path, or orbit, around Saturn, taking a very, very long time to make one trip.
What's Kiviuq Made Of?
Scientists think Kiviuq is made mostly of rock and ice. Imagine a giant snowball mixed with some dirt! Because it's so far from the Sun, it's very, very cold out there. It's so cold that water stays frozen solid, making up a big part of this moon. It doesn't have any air to breathe, just like most moons in our solar system.
A Moon's Long Journey
Kiviuq takes a super long time to go around Saturn. It's like a marathon runner compared to our Moon's quick jog around Earth. One trip around Saturn for Kiviuq takes about 740 Earth days! That's almost two whole years for us. So, if you could watch Kiviuq from Saturn, you'd see it taking its sweet time on its journey.
