Where the River Begins its Journey!

Imagine a river starting way up high in super tall mountains called the Sierra Nevada! That's where the Kings River begins, near a place called Kings Canyon. This canyon is so deep, it's like a giant crack in the Earth, deeper than many skyscrapers are tall!

The river rushes down, tumbling over rocks and making a beautiful, wild sound. It's a long river, about as long as 213 football fields lined up end to end!

A River for Animals and People!

Long, long ago, this river was super important for animals and people. It helped create a giant lake called Tulare Lake, which was bigger than many cities! Millions of birds, fish, and animals lived there. Native American tribes, like the Yokuts, lived by the river and used its water and the animals for food. They knew how to take care of this special place for thousands of years.

Making the River Work for Us!

People learned to use the river's water to grow yummy food like fruits and vegetables on farms. They built a big wall called a dam to hold back some of the water, like a giant bathtub, to stop floods and save water for dry days. This dam is called Pine Flat Dam. Today, the Kings River helps water a HUGE amount of farmland, making it one of the best places for growing food in the whole country!

Fun Times by the River!

Even though the river helps grow food, it's also a place for fun! People love to go swimming, boating, and hiking near the Kings River. The mountains and canyons around it are perfect for exploring. It's a place where nature's beauty meets the hard work of growing food, making the Kings River a super special part of California.
