Meet the King of the Penguins!

King penguins are like the second-biggest penguins in the whole world, just a little smaller than Emperor penguins. They have bright orange patches on their necks that look like fancy scarves! These amazing birds are excellent swimmers and divers, spending a lot of time in the chilly ocean looking for yummy food. They waddle around on land with their friends in big groups.

Where Do They Call Home?

King penguins live on islands near Antarctica, which are super cold places with lots of ice and snow. Imagine living where it's always winter! They like places like South Georgia and other islands that are not quite as far south as the very coldest parts of Antarctica. They also visit islands like Macquarie Island and the Falkland Islands. It's a wild and windy home!

What's for Dinner?

King penguins are expert hunters in the ocean! Their favorite meals are small fish called lanternfish, squids, and tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill. To catch their food, they dive super deep, sometimes deeper than a 10-story building is tall! They can hold their breath for a long time while they search for tasty snacks in the dark, cold water.

Cool Penguin Facts!

Did you know that king penguins used to be hunted for their oil and feathers? Thankfully, they are now protected and it's against the law to harm them. This means their numbers are doing much better. They are truly special birds that we need to take care of. They also have a very long breeding cycle, taking over a year to raise just one chick!
