Key Facts
Where is This Amazing Place?
The Kimberley is way up north in Western Australia, like the tippy-top of a giant boot! It’s surrounded by big blue oceans: the Indian Ocean on one side and the Timor Sea on the other. To the south, it meets sandy deserts, and to the east, it bumps into another big state called the Northern Territory. It’s a super big place, so big that it feels like a whole country!
Red Rocks and Blue Waters!
Get ready for amazing sights! The Kimberley has huge, rugged mountains that look like they’re made of red candy. There are also deep gorges, like giant cracks in the earth, and sparkling blue rivers that wind through the land. Sometimes, the land is dry and dusty, but other times, especially after rain, it turns a beautiful green. It’s a place with lots of different landscapes to explore!
Who Named This Wild Land?
A long, long time ago, in 1879, a man named Alexander Forrest was exploring this wild place. He was a surveyor, which means he measured the land. He decided to name this special region after a very important person in England called John Wodehouse, who was the Earl of Kimberley. So, the name ‘Kimberley’ came all the way from England to describe this incredible part of Australia!
What Do People Do There?
People in the Kimberley work with the land and the sea. Some people might be farmers, looking after animals like cattle. Others work in places that help visitors explore the amazing nature.
It’s a place where people live close to the land and respect its beauty. There are also ancient stories and traditions that have been passed down for thousands of years by the Aboriginal people who have lived there the longest.
