Who is Kim Davis?

Imagine you have a job where you help people get special papers, like a license to drive a car. Kim Davis had a job like that, but she helped people get marriage licenses. These are important papers for people who want to get married. She worked in a place called Rowan County in Kentucky. In 2015, something happened that made lots of people hear her name.

A Big Decision!

The country's highest court made a new rule that said everyone could get married, no matter who they loved. Kim Davis had to give out marriage licenses to everyone. But Kim had her own beliefs about marriage, and she didn't want to give licenses to same-sex couples.

So, she decided not to give out any marriage licenses at all! It was like saying, 'I won't do this part of my job because of what I believe.'

What Happened Next?

Because Kim Davis didn't follow the new rule, a judge told her she had to. But she still said no! The judge was very serious and sent her to jail for a few days. While she was in jail, other people in her office started giving out the marriage licenses. When she got out, she changed the licenses so her name wasn't on them anymore.

Why Did It Matter?

Lots of people had strong feelings about what Kim Davis did. Some people agreed with her, saying she was brave for sticking to her beliefs. Others thought she should follow the law, even if she didn't agree with it. It made everyone think about rules, beliefs, and what's fair for everyone in the country.
