Key Facts
What's a Keftiu?
Keftiu was a name used a super long time ago by people in ancient Egypt. They used this name to talk about a special place far away. This place was like a big island, and the people who lived there were called Minoans and Mycenaeans. They were excellent sailors and had boats that traveled very far, even to the island of Crete! So, Keftiu was like a nickname for Crete and its busy traders.
Where Did the Name Travel?
At first, the Egyptians used Keftiu to mean the island of Crete. But guess what? Over time, the name started to travel!
Around 1300 BC, the Egyptians began using the name Keftiu to talk about a different area, closer to them, called the Levant. It's like if you started calling your favorite toy by a new name after a while. The name changed where it pointed, just like the Egyptians changed where Keftiu was!
Trading Treasures!
The people from Keftiu were super important because they were amazing traders. They sailed their ships all over the sea, bringing back wonderful things. Ancient Egyptians loved trading with them. These traders were like the delivery drivers of the ancient world, bringing goods from far away. Their ships were like the big trucks of today, carrying lots of important stuff across the water.
A Name in Old Stories
Even in old stories from the Bible, there's a name that sounds like Keftiu! It's called Kaphtor. In those stories, Kaphtor was thought to be the home of the Philistines, who were sometimes called the Sea Peoples.
These Sea Peoples were known for sailing around and sometimes causing trouble. So, the name Keftiu, or something very similar, pops up in different ancient stories, showing how connected the ancient world was.
