Meet the Dirt Detective!

Imagine a detective, but instead of looking for clues in a house, they look for clues buried deep in the earth! That was Kathleen Kenyon. She was a very special kind of scientist called an archaeologist. Archaeologists dig up old things that people left behind long, long ago to learn about how they lived. Kathleen loved finding these treasures from the past!

Digging Up Old Homes!

Kathleen's most famous adventure was digging at a place called Tell es-Sultan. This was once the city of Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world! She dug there for many years, from 1952 to 1958. It was like uncovering a giant, ancient toy box, full of broken pots, old tools, and even parts of houses. She carefully brushed away the dirt to see what stories they told.

Why She's a History Star!

Kathleen Kenyon was so good at her job that people call her one of the most important archaeologists of the 1900s. She helped us understand what life was like for people who lived thousands of years ago. She found out that people lived in Jericho even when it was a Neolithic village, which is super, super old! Her discoveries are like puzzle pieces that help us see the whole picture of history.

A Smart Leader!

Besides being a fantastic digger, Kathleen was also very smart in school. She studied at a famous university called Oxford. Later, she became the boss, or Principal, of a college there called St Hugh's. So, she was not only a brilliant explorer but also a great leader who helped other students learn and grow. She showed everyone that women could be amazing scientists and leaders!
