Who Was Kang Kek Iew?

Imagine a person named Kang Kek Iew. He was also known by a nickname, 'Comrade Duch.' He was part of a group called the Khmer Rouge that was in charge of Cambodia a long, long time ago, from 1975 to 1979. He was the boss of a very scary place called Tuol Sleng prison, which was also known as S-21.

This prison was a place where many people were taken, and sadly, many did not come out. Kang Kek Iew was responsible for what happened to them.

The Secret Prison of S-21

Tuol Sleng, or S-21, was like a secret, scary school where the lessons were very bad. Kang Kek Iew was the principal of this dark place. Thousands of people were brought there. They were questioned, and sometimes treated very badly. It's a sad part of history, but it's important to learn about it. Kang Kek Iew was found guilty of being in charge when many people were hurt or lost their lives.

A Very Important Trial!

Kang Kek Iew was the very first person from the Khmer Rouge leaders to be put on trial for the terrible things that happened. This trial was like a big court case to find out what really happened and who was responsible. He was found guilty of crimes against humanity, which means he did very bad things to many people.

He was sentenced to a very long time in prison, and later his sentence was made even longer.

Saying Sorry for Bad Things

Unlike some other leaders, Kang Kek Iew did not try to pretend he did nothing wrong. He actually said he was sorry for the horrible things he did. He even said he became a Christian and felt regret.
