Johnstown Flood

Key Facts
Where the Big Water Came From
Far away, high up in the mountains of Pennsylvania, there was a giant lake held back by a huge wall called the South Fork Dam. This dam sat on a river called the Little Conemaugh River. It was like a giant bathtub holding back tons and tons of water. The town of Johnstown was nestled in the valley below, a place where people lived and worked.
When the Rain Wouldn't Stop!
One spring, it rained and rained and rained for days! The giant lake behind the dam got fuller and fuller. It was like filling a bathtub too high. The dam was made of dirt and rocks, and it couldn't hold all that extra water. The ground got super soggy, and the water pushed and pushed.
WHOOSH! The Big Flood!
Then, on a sunny Friday, the dam broke! Imagine a giant wave, taller than a house, rushing down the mountain. This wave was made of millions of gallons of water and carried trees and rocks with it. It zoomed down the river, picking up speed, and headed straight for Johnstown. It was a terrifying and powerful sight!
Helping Hands After the Splash
When the water finally stopped, the town of Johnstown was changed forever. So many people lost their homes and belongings. But amazing helpers, like the American Red Cross, rushed in to help. People from all over the country and even other countries sent food, clothes, and money to help the people of Johnstown rebuild their lives.
