Who Was This Awesome Pope?

Imagine a super kind leader who wanted everyone to be friends! That was Pope John XXIII. He was the head of the Catholic Church, like a principal for a giant worldwide school. He was born Angelo Roncalli a long, long time ago in a small village in Italy. He loved people and wanted to make the world a more peaceful and understanding place for everyone.

From a Farm to the Vatican!

Angelo grew up in a big family on a farm, helping his parents. He was one of 13 kids! He felt a special calling to help others and became a priest.

He traveled to many different countries, like France, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey, meeting all sorts of people. Then, when he was 76, he became Pope John XXIII! That's like becoming the captain of a huge ship when you thought you were just going to enjoy a nice cruise.

His Super-Duper Big Idea: Vatican II!

Pope John XXIII had a brilliant idea: he called for a giant meeting called the Second Vatican Council. It was like a huge, important school assembly for the whole Catholic Church! He wanted the Church to be more modern and open to the world.

He believed everyone was special and made in God's image, so everyone should be treated with kindness and respect. This council helped the Church talk to other Christian groups and understand different countries better.

The Pope Who Loved Everyone

People called him 'il papa buono,' which means 'the Good Pope' in Italian. He made sure to include people from all over the world, even from places like Africa and Japan, by naming them as important leaders. He showed that it's important to listen to everyone and work together.

Even though he got sick and passed away before the big meeting finished, his ideas for kindness and understanding lived on.
