Meet the Little King!

John Sigismund Zápolya was born a prince in 1540, but guess what? He became the King of Hungary when he was only a few months old! His dad, King John I, wanted him to be king.

But Hungary was a bit tricky back then, with two kings trying to rule different parts. John Sigismund was too young to rule himself, so his mom and advisors helped him out. It was like being the boss of a big playground, but you're still learning to walk!

Adventures in Transylvania!

When John Sigismund was still a little boy, his family had to move. They went to a place called Transylvania, which is like a special kingdom within a kingdom. He lived in a castle and learned about ruling. Sometimes, people wanted to take over his land, so he had to be brave! He even met with powerful leaders like the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman, who was like a super-important king from far away.

A King Who Changed His Mind About Beliefs!

As John Sigismund grew up, he started thinking a lot about important ideas, especially about religion. He first followed one way of believing, then another, and then a third! He became the only king in history to believe in a religion called Unitarianism.

This meant he believed everyone should be free to choose what they believe in, which was super special for his time. He even helped make a rule that said people couldn't be punished for their religion!

Becoming a Prince, Not a King

Even though he was called King John II for a while, John Sigismund eventually decided to be called the Prince of Transylvania. This meant he was still a very important leader, but he was in charge of a specific area. He made sure his land was protected and tried to keep everyone happy. He was a unique leader who made big decisions about his country and what people believed.
